This project aims to support IAEA Member States in integrating nuclear and nuclear-derived techniques into efforts to address marine plastic pollution. Implemented under the NUTEC Plastics Initiative, it focuses on strengthening scientific and technical capacities for monitoring the abundance, distribution, composition, transport, and potential impacts of microplastics in marine and coastal environments. The project promotes the use of harmonized sampling, sample preparation, analytical, and quality-assurance protocols to generate reliable and comparable data across participating countries. It also supports laboratory capacity development through specialized training, interlaboratory comparisons, expert guidance, knowledge exchange, networking, and access to analytical technologies. By establishing and expanding a global network of marine microplastic monitoring laboratories, the project will contribute to identifying pollution trends, improving data quality, and supporting evidence-based environmental policies. Its broader objective is to enhance international cooperation and provide robust scientific information for protecting marine ecosystems and advancing progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 14.
